Upon first glance, I was frustrated with Allegiant. It was far too focused on the trite teenage love between Tris and Four, far too blasé about the greater problems the characters’ society faced. About a quarter of the way through, all of that changed.

Roth begins discussing the underlying politics of the factions leading to some interesting revelations. Though she’s discussed it in interviews, this is the first time that the world of Divergent as Chicago really becomes concrete. We learn that there is a world outside the city, a world that not only knows that the factions are there but also watches their every move.

There’s so much to learn about the world outside the city that I found myself disappointed the story moved so quickly. Roth obviously knows her base and spends a fair bit of time explaining the romantic relationships of all involved; time that may have been better spent looking into the motivations of the political leaders.

Ultimately Roth brings the series to a satisfying, if not slightly saccharine, conclusion perfect for devoted fans and casual readers alike.
