I recently finished my Handmaid’s Tale cosplay and I wanted to share a little bit about the process of making it, before I reveal the full photos. Bear with me as I walk through these five posts about my cosplay. I didn’t realize how much I had to say until I was done writing them. The full costume will be posted next week sometime if you’d like to wait around until then.
Of all of the cosplays to work on, why did I choose to do the Handmaid’s Tale? Though there are a myriad of reasons, I’ll share just a few.

- The Handmaid’s Taleis one of my favorite books. I read The Handmaid’s Tale in high school and immediately fell in love with Atwood’s writing. She creates a world that is so immersive. It was also the book that set off my love affair with epistolary novels.
- The Hulu series is absolutely incredible. Sure, I started watching because I loved the book ( + it starred 3 of my favorite actresses Elizabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel and Samira Wiley) but I kept watching because the way that the show runners extended the story is incredible. I think a lot about who owns a story after it is published since I love talking to students about fanfic. This series is an example of the original author working with new creators to bring her story to life, in light of everything that has happened since it was published in the 1980s.

- I’m teaching an English course on power, justice, and authority in the fall and it seemed like a good time to reflect on The Handmaid’s Tale.
